The history of I.E.S. Frei Martín Sarmiento dates back to 1932, with the birth of the “Escuela Elemental del Trabajo”, in which professional teachings of Electricity, Wood and Metal were taught.In 1955, it became an “Industrial Master’s School”, with official and Industrial Master’s degrees in the aforementioned branches.
In 1969 the branches of Electronics, Delineation and Automotive were added, in 1972 the branch of Hairdressing and Aesthetics was started and, experimentally, the branch of Administrative and Commercial following the new curriculum of “Vocational Training” . In that same year the A.P.A. from the center was created.
With the entry into force of the General Law of Education of 71, the Center acquires the denomination of “Polytechnic Institute of Vocational Training” in 1974, adapting to the new curriculum of Vocational Training. In this year an association of former students is created, now disappeared.
In 1979, due to the increase in the demand for school posts, the branches of Wood, Automotive and Electronics were split up, which became the Xunqueira Vocational Training Institute.
A new division in 1987, will give place to the Vocational Training Institute of Monteporreiro, currently IES “Luis Seoane”.
In 1993, a new expansion took place with the teachings of the branch of Community Services, which functioned as an extension in the Torrente Ballester Institute classrooms until the end of the 1996-97 academic year, which was transferred to the Baccalaureate Institute “Xunqueira I “.
The last transfer of teachings was in the year 2000, when the Professional Family of Delineation happens to be implanted in the IES “Torrente Ballester.
With the entry into force of the General Education Law, the Institute acquires the name of the Polytechnic Institute of Vocational Training, which remains until with the Organic Ordinance of General Organization of the Educational System (LOGSE) it becomes an Institute of Secondary Education, with the name of IES “Fr. Martín Sarmiento “, since 1998.
